About

Geert Hendrickx came in touch with the guitar for the first time at the age of eleven. After a period of being self-taught, he followed some private lessons and started playing in local bands in the area of Landen and Sint-Truiden; these bands were more rock and metal oriented. As a result, he won the Guitar Contest at Graspop Metal Meeting 2005 at the age of twelve.

Later he fell in love with jazz music and he enrolled in the music academy of Sint-Truiden where he graduated with first prize. Then he continued his studies at the jazz department of the Lemmensinstitute, where he was taught by Peter Hertmans, Nic Thys, Frank Vaganée, Dre Pallemaerts… After his Bachelors degree, he got his Masters degree at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he learned from Frederik Leroux, Kurt van Herck, Ben Sluijs, Bert Joris …

In 2015 he founded the band GIZMO, first collaborating with American saxophone player Chris Cheek, who was later replaced by Ben Sluijs. With GIZMO, Geert managed to play on lots of Belgian jazz stages, including the huge Jazz Middelheim. In 2018 GIZMO released an EP. In that same year, he was elected to arrange and play for the Antwerp Jazz Orchestra in charge of Bert Joris with Joshua Redman as a guest soloist. He is the guitarist of ‘Zandland’, that is melting jazz with cabaret. He is now also backing Esmé Bos and Bart Voets in their project ‘ELLA’.

In 2019 he founded Yskan, in collaboration with some of the most promising young jazz musicians who already have quite the name in Belgium: Sam Comerford (Thunderblender), Anneleen Boehme (LABtrio) and Simon Raman (Steiger). In 2021 they released their debut album in coproduction with Motives for Jazz with a positive critical acclaim.
